Who’s Best: Horde or Alliance?
You can take an interesting study of good and evil by looking at the two sides in World of Warcraft. The Horde and The Alliance are the 2 huge factions that are forever at war and dominate the World of Azeroth, where WoW is based. So why do people pick Horde or Alliance? What do the two sides represent and consist of? What sort of people play either side? And the biggest question: Who is better? Discover which side could be for you in this article.
It’s true that you do find bad guys playing in Alliance, and good characters and NPCs in The Horde every now and then. On the whole The Horde represents the bad guys in WoW, and The Alliance are the good guys. You can see this clearly reflected in the races of each side. The races of The Alliance are Humans, Night Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes and the wierd but noble Draenei. And on the side of The Horde are the Orcs, The Trolls, Tauren, Undead and the beautiful but evil Blood Elves.
And so there are really 3 things people consider when choosing which side to join: First and foremost, what class you are going to play – each class is limited to certain races, but each class can be played by a race of each alignment. Next you will want to go for a race that interestes you: because of the racial abilities they get, but also the roleplaying side of things. And finally, you need to decide who you want to fight for – the good side or the evil side.

When you take a look at the 11 million players of WoW, the demographies of Horde and Alliance are quite similar. A few more people tend to chose Alliance over Horde when getting started. Maybe to be aligned to the good side, maybe other reasons. The number of each sex is equal on both sides. One small but telling difference is the age group of each side: Horde players are generally slightly younger than Alliance players.
Can we see any reasons for players to pick one side or the other? We begin to see a very interesting difference when we look at the motivations of the players on each side: Horde players are much more interested in Competition, Mechanics and Advancement that Alliance players. To a higher degree they are pushed on by the prospect of achievement and competitiveness. They get greater enjoyment from provoking opponenets and challenging people, and are generally more aggresive – as the Horde races are known to be.
But in The Alliance, players want to enjoy the Roleplay side of WoW, and are more driven by customization: having interesting interactions with other players and characters and building themselves and things up, which are definitely things we accosiate with goodness.
And so it seems that players choose sides based on whether they actualy want to act more evil and aggressive, or peaceful and creative. Would you agree?
