World PvP: Your Hunter Can Dominate

November 5, 2009 · Filed Under Video Games

Player versus Player (PvP) combat is in your Hunter’s future, even if you’ve avoided it so far. Wrath of the Lich King transformed World of Warcraft’s World PvP. There’s now a real time PvP battle zone called Lake Wintergrasp. There, the emphasis is on real-time World PvP. There players battle on the live server (no instancing) to win points that allow them to buy rare and valuable items such as the new Heirloom items. These are items that any character in their account from level 1 to 80 and beyond can take advantage of.

Given the popularity of Lake Wintergrasp and the increasing amount of PvP combat in other popular games, you’ll surely see more even more PvP in WoW in the future. Here’s what you need to know to handle your Hunter in this new world:

Playing a Hunter class character in WoW PvP requires many of the same skills real hunter possess. You need to be able to identify the target and understand its likely behavior so you can anticipate its next move. In addition, you need to know your own capabilities and the capabilities of your gear. And you need to be able to maneuver to the right position to take out your target before they can take you down.

But playing a hunter in PvP involves much more than that. You need to know when and how to employ your Freezing and Frost Traps and essential crowd control devices is one thing. You need to know how to manage the space between you and your prey to cause the most possible DPS damage in each fight. And you must do all this against a foe who is trying just as hard to out-think and out-maneuver you as you are to do the same to him.

If you want to be really successful in Hunter PvP combat, you need to understand the behavior of each enemy class and have a strategy for defeating them. In particular you need to understand how Druids or Warriors or Rogues are most likely to approach you. And you need to know how to counter those classes that can close to melee combat range quickly, such as Warriors and Rogues.

You can learn much of what you need to win as a Hunter in PvP simply by spending time in the arena. But I can tell you from personal experience that if you try, you had better be prepared to get crushed and humiliated for a long time. I spent many frustrating hours ranking last or near last in the standings when I tried. It wasn’t until I picked up a Hunter PvP Guide that I was able to make real progress.

Because a top notch Hunter PvP Guide contains the hard-earned experience of veteran Hunters, it will contain information that you’re unlikely to discover on your own. In short, a good PvP Guide will save you vast amounts of time and energy you would otherwise spend on trial and error.
