WoW Lockpicking – Unlocking the Secrets
Lockpicking is skill available only to the Rogue class. As soon as you reach level 16 on your Rogue character you can learn the “Pick Lock” ability at your trainer. The Lockpick ability can be used to open chests, doors, footlockers etc.
Lockpicking – a real profession?
Lockpicking works similar to other professions. It can be trained and then skilled to the maximum. Once he reaches the max skill in Lockpicking, a Rogue can unlock almost everything.
How do I level my Lockpicking?
There is a simple answer to this. A Rogue can raise his skill only by picking locks. The leveling system works similar as the gathering professions. In order to train your skill you need to look for locks while you level up. Luckily your Rogue trainer can assist you and tell you where you can find locks that match your current lock pick level. Why only Rogues?
Rogues are considered to be characters that live in shadows. Most of their game play is based on sneaking and being in stealth. With their pickpocket and lockpick skills they are perfect thieves. As a Rogue you can go in stealth and make your way to a chest and open it even if it’s locked. Hiding and being invisible are their main advantages.
Special items available for Lockpicking
As of now there is only one way to boost your lockpick skill which are the Dark Leather Gloves. You should ask a Leatheworker to assist you in making these gloves since the give 5 extra points in Lockpicking. Besides boosting your lockpick skill they also make sure that you succeed more often on your attempts to open locks.
Alternatives?
If it happens that you are not a Rogue or that your Lockpicking skill isn’t high enough to unlock something you want, there will be a few other alternatives.
Blacksmiths in example can craft keys which can also be used to open boxes. The Blacksmith can learn 4 different key plans from his trainer. With each recipe he will be able to craft two keys.

Should I charge for my Lockpicking services?
This totally depends on you. If you see a Rogue announcing that he is willing to open boxes for people he usually makes it clear whether he is doing it for free or not. Many Rogues do not even bother to offer this service.
Asking for assistance
It can happen during your time in the game that you end up with a lot of locked boxes and once you have several of them you can always ask someone in your guild to open them for you. If you can’t find anybody you know to help you out you should approach any Rogue you come across. It’s polite to ask the Rogue first before you open the trade window.
